The Bachelor Recap: It's the "OG" Contestants Versus the Newbies

So many dates and so many rumors were packed into the latest episode of The Bachelor–listen up, we've got a lot to cover!

This week, we jumped right into the group date. It felt like a really short date that was interrupted by scenes of the ladies (and by ladies, I really just mean Victoria) still discussing Sarah’s exit. In short: Chelsea got the group date rose in the end.

Now on to the delayed rose ceremony, which started with a cocktail party. While Matt is mid-conversation with Victoria, they’re promptly interrupted by...Chris Harrison. When Chris Harrison mysteriously appears out of nowhere, you know sh*t is about to go down.

Chris then tells Matt that they’re adding some new contestants tonight. For those Bachelor obsessives keeping score, this is a twist we really haven’t seen before. One or two new contestants, sure, but this ended up meaning five new women introduced three weeks into it. And with that: cue the nervous breakdowns from the existing contestants, who promptly name themselves “OGs" or the "varsity squad."

First we meet Brittany–who makes a *real* entrance by “making up for lost time” which means grabbing Matt and kissing him. Of course, all the girls are watching this go down from inside the house. Brittany is followed by Michelle, Ryan, Kim, and Catalina, who showed up in a crown because she is Miss Universe Puerto Rico.

The “OGs” are literally unwell at this point–Anna is having a full-blown meltdown on camera, MJ is saying how unfair it is, and Victoria was just mad that Catalina was wearing a crown. Once Catalina arrived inside the house, Victoria literally stole her crown and put it on her head. You could tell Catalina was like “WTF is happening,” which is honestly how I felt too.

I get it, introducing new women is a serious twist, but it’s not like these contestants asked for a delayed timeline. It’s the Bachelor producers working their dark magic, and I feel like we need to give the newbies a break!

But that’s not what happens: Anna and Brittany are both from Chicago, and Anna very vaguely says she’s heard negative rumors about Brittany. Ominous, right?! That little tidbit blows up later–stay tuned for more.

At the beginning of the episode, we had 18 ladies. Now we’ve got 23, and it’s finally time for the rose ceremony. Rachael, Serena P., and Chelsea are already safe thanks to their roses from their respective dates. Matt gives the rest of his roses to MJ, Pieper, Bri, Magi, Michelle, Mari, Ryan, Kit, Serena C., Abigail, Katie, Victoria, Lauren, Brittany, Jessenia, Anna, and Catalina. I know what you're thinking: Matt has to make some serious cuts in the next few weeks, and you're 100% right.

Next, it’s time for a group date (which has three of the four new ladies on it). Former Bachelor Ben Higgins is on hand to help with the date, which is essentially a giant fall-themed obstacle course. It involves kayaking and searching for “acorns” in a squirrel suit, just to paint a picture for you. Magi struggles with the kayaking portion (from one Magi/Maggie to another: I feel your pain here), and Mari won the whole course in the end.

The date continues with a nighttime portion. While Matt is speaking with Anna, they’re quickly interrupted by Brittany. Anna is obviously annoyed, and she then drops a major rumor bomb about Brittany. “She may be having a transactional relationship with wealthy men,” Anna said. That is a STRONG claim, Anna! 😱

More to come on that later, but to wrap up this date: Bri ends up with the group date rose.

Newbie Michelle is up for the next date, a one-on-one. Everyone’s mad that the new arrival is getting coveted solo time, but Matt and Michelle are totally unbothered. Their date is a scavenger hunt, which involves zip-lining and popping balloons that contain cute “get to know you” questions. They end up making out during a hot air balloon ride, and the rest of the ladies watch it all go down (with binoculars to get a closer view).

This episode was packed with dates, so we quickly moved into another group date. It’s a boxing-themed date that ends with the “Battle for the Bachelor” boxing match. Everyone on this date is an “OG:” we’ve got Katie, Pieper, Serena P., Rachael, Kit, Chelsea, Jessenia, Lauren, Serena C., MJ. They all really let out some aggression during the boxing match. It got so violent that Matt actually ended the boxing early so nobody got hurt.

At the after party, the contestants are still discussing the arrival of the new ladies. Katie is tired of the nonstop bullying, and she decides to let Matt know about the drama and rumors among the contestants. This is the second week we've seen a very sensible Katie sticking up for the underdog while the rest of the ladies pile on–Katie, we ❤️ you! Matt is clearly not happy, and he said he will raise the bullying issue to the whole group.

Like any good cliffhanger, this will all happen next week. Based on the preview, Matt is taking on the mean girls head on—good luck to you, Matt! We can’t wait to watch it all go down.
