Splurge vs. Save: Which Home Decor Pieces Are Worth the Investment?
My bedroom dresser was the first home item I splurged on and it’s proven to be worthwhile as it’s lived with me through 3 apartments to date! When you reside in a New York City apartment, typically space is limited so you may only have room for a few ‘hero’ pieces. I believe a dresser falls into that category especially when you are seeking to maximize space for clothes in a visually pleasing way- meaning a large, pretty dresser. I chose this mirrored 10-drawer dresser because it was versatile, chic, and spacious.

I wouldn’t say you should always bargain on your rugs, but I believe there is a reason for it depending on the room and your stage of life. My mom is an interior decorator and has taught me that machine-made rugs are wildly more affordable than those that are handwoven, and can often be just as pretty. More importantly, when you realize the wear and tear rugs receive, it’s harder to justify an excessive cost. If you spend time perusing the internet, you will discover multiple retailers- like Wayfair, Overstock, West elm, and more - that sell terrific rugs at accessible price points.

A splurge-worthy item for me is definitely my sofa. When it comes to sofas, where I spend most of my daily time on, I believe they should always be comfortable and built with the intent of lasting for a very, very long time. I usually spend a ton of time researching and comparing before I buy a big-ticket item, but I immediately fell in love with Interior Define’s assortment of sofas and chairs and their chic selection of fabrics. They were also the most collaborative group of designers I’ve had the pleasure of working with. For someone like me who loves interiors and likes to be part of the design process, I really value brands who will work with you to create your own custom pieces!

Accent pieces definitely go in the “save” bucket for me. I usually like to style my focal point of furniture with accent pieces like side tables, throws, and decorative pillows, but they are usually only around for a short amount of time. I oftentimes get bored with color schemes and like to switch things up throughout the year, so knowing that I’ve spent less on these types of items makes me feel less guilty when I want to purchase something new later on! I’ll usually go to retailers like H&M which offer a plethora of accents for as little as $10... which means more $$$ in your splurge bucket!

I splurged on my bed, and it was so worth it! I have a Casper mattress, which is incredibly comfortable and breathable. The mattress is a perfect combination with a pair of super luxurious Boll & Branch sheets. They’re 100% organic cotton, and the supersoft fabric actually gets even softer over time. My favorite set has beautiful embroidery for added style.

All of my rugs are on the affordable side! I always get them from Overstock or Wayfair because I have a dog who sheds its not worth me spending too much on a rug. Plus, they always have such great options! I feel like I always get sick of rugs and whenever I move I usually want to replace it. I highly suggest reading the review section and looking for real pictures on there–that is always super helpful for me.
